Greening eCommerce Project with GIZ Ghana

The Pan-African eCommerce Initiative was aimed at strengthening the environment for eCommerce in Africa, with a focus on reducing the environmental impact of eCommerce activities.

Powered by SnooCODE technology, we are pioneering a sustainable solution by reducing product packaging and carbon emissions in eCommerce using SnooCODE’s Route Optimization and Verification Technology, and reusable, security-sealed delivery bags.

Problems with a Growing eCommerce Market

As of 2023, the eCommerce market penetration in Ghana was about 12.52% and the sector is expected to continue expanding. Ghana’s eCommerce Market size is US$916.80 million, with the Retail Delivery Segment standing at US$99.25 million in 2024.

The implications of this are:

  1. Mounting waste from product packaging

  2. Increased carbon emissions from multiple delivery vehicles

2-Pronged Approach to Solving The Problem

  • We designed and produced reusable delivery bags made from recycled fabric off-cuts and pieces. The use of these reduced the need for extra packaging in eCommerce delivery.

  • All deliveries were done using electric bikes (ebikes) together with our proprietary route optimization technology, significantly contributing to reduced carbon emissions.

What We Achieved

  1. During the project, one delivery bag was used 156 times (removing 155 single-use plastics in packaging).

  2. All deliveries were done using e-bikes, reducing carbon emissions by 58.82%.

  3. Vendors on the project saw a 20% increase in online sales when they were able to provide deliveries to their customers.
